VTS Workday: Arcata Community Forest

January 27 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Dear Incredible Volunteers,

This is just a reminder that we have a work day this Saturday, January 27th, beginning at 9 am. We will be working on the Bay Trail North and on some of the Arcata Marsh trails.  Darius tells me that the small lot in front of the entrance to Arcata’s Corp Yard has re-opened so we will meet there (see the map below).  We will work rain or shine and the current forecast is for rain so come prepared.

We will be picking up trash along the length of the trail, continuing to clip back blackberry and fennel growth, and if weather permits, doing some mowing and weed whacking. I have the ingredients for sandwiches at lunch.

As I mentioned in my initial e-mail about the work day, we have a NEW PLAN FOR MOWING THE MARSH AND BAY TRAIL NORTH. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. We are going to expand our use of our riding mower in 2024 (as long as it lasts).  Four routes have been developed – two on Marsh trails, one south to Two Rocks, and one north crossing Samoa Blvd to the Creamery District on the Arcata City Trail.  Each route will take about 2 hours and we will try to do each route just once a month beginning in mid-March.  I am hoping that folks will volunteer to take on a few shifts (or more) between mid-March and mid-October.  You do not have to have experience but will need to receive a little training if you have not used the mower before.  If you are interested and willing (or have questions), let me know and I will begin to develop a schedule.

I encourage you to bring your own gloves (I’ll have some extra gloves) and water . . . Let me know if you have any questions.

It is nice to know how many volunteers are coming so that I can better prepare tasks and tools and food. It would be great if you RSVP to me at hughes@humboldt.edu

I hope to see many of you on Saturday.
