Volunteer

The Volunteer Trail Stewards provide “eyes and ears” presence on designated trails, report observations and trail maintenance issues, perform basic litter collection and participate in maintenance workdays. VTS are Humboldt Trails Council volunteers.

There are currently twelve VTS projects across the county, as listed below.

Arcata Community Forest Trails – Volunteer workdays are the 4th Saturday of every month, except December. Meeting locations TBA. Contact Rees at Hughes@humboldt.edu

Chah GAH Cho Trail – The McKinleyville Land Trust, in partnership with VTS, schedules volunteer workdays. Contact the McKinleyville Land Trust at volunteer.mlt@gmail.com to get involved.

Eureka Waterfront Trail North (Tydd St. to Adorni Center) – Volunteer workdays are the 3rd Saturday of every month, 9am to 11am. Meet at the foot of X street in front of the Blue Ox Mill. Contact Rachael at vtscoordinator@humtrails.org.

Eureka Wharf Trail (‘C’ St to Del Norte St) – Volunteer workdays are the 1st Sunday of every month, 9am – 11am. Meet at the Wharfinger Building parking lot. There are also additional volunteer work opportunities. Contact Gail at gailpopham@gmail.com.

Freshwater Farms Reserve Nature Trail (5851 Myrtle Ave, Freshwater, just south of the barn) – The Northcoast Regional Land Trust, in partnership with VTS, holds volunteer workdays every 3rd Sunday between April thru October. Contact info@ncrlt.org.

Hammond Trail (Arcata Bottoms to Clam Beach, McKinleyville) – Volunteer workdays are the 1st Saturday of every month (except January), 9am-11am. Meeting locations TBA. Contact Stacy at sbecker@reninet.com

Hikshari’ Trail (Eureka’s Truesdale St. to Elk River Park & Ride) – Volunteer work days are the 2nd Saturday of every month, 9am-11am. Contact Mark at hikshari@humtrails.org

Humboldt Coastal Nature Center Trails (Manila) – Friends of the Dunes has workdays periodically at the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center. Call Friends of the Dunes at 444-1397 or info@friendsofthedunes.org

Mad River Bluffs – The McKinleyville Land Trust, in partnership with VTS, schedules workdays. Contact the McKinleyville Land Trust at volunteer.mlt@gmail.com to get involved.

Lacks Creek Trails (Redwood Valley) – Volunteer workdays: locations and dates TBA. Contact info@redwoodcoastmtb.org

McKay Community Forest (Eureka near Redwood Acres) – Volunteer workdays occur on the 1st Saturday of every month from 9am-12pm, as well as on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9am-2pm. To get involved contact Rachael at vtscoordinator@humtrails.org or Dennis at dbhedm@gmail.com.
