The NCRA has called a special meeting for this same day (2/18) at 8 am to authorize “Counsel to Circulate and File all Documents Before the Surface Transportation Board as Necessary to Effectuate Railbanking of MP (mile post) 139.5 near Willits to MP 284.1 near Eureka Including Related Branch Lines.” According to their maps 139.5 is on the south side of Willits, but in the city limits. MP 284 is just north of the Ballon Tract. They list a Eureka/Samoa Branch that ends in Fairhaven, and a Korblex Branch that their map shows ending at Blue Lake City limits. The other is the Carlotta Branch that goes east along Highway 36 almost to Vanduzen Park.
This will protect the line while the railbanking is hopefully completed. The NCRA Strategic Plan that was just approved by CTC calls for railbanking to the Sonoma/Mendocino line near Cloverdale where SMART will take over, but so far there isn’t an explanation why they are starting with just our section.
