Hikshari’ Trail VTS Workday

Greetings Hardy Hikshari Volunteers!

Our next workday is on Saturday, April 9th, 0900 – 1100, and we will search and destroy invasive weeds that have taken the opportunity to sprout in the nice weather. If they’re anything like my back lawn, there will be plenty to cut! I would especially like to check in the willow thicket for English Ivy. I was just hiking in the Avenue of the Giants last week, and it is amazing how the Ivy has taken over in some spots, growing hundreds of feet up the old growth redwoods, covering large areas with a solid mat of vegetation, and spawning literally thousands of seedlings. It was a stark illustration of what can happen once an invasive is left alone too long – something I would like to avoid along our own trail! There will be trash to pick up of course, and new plantings to water, so a variety of tasks. I will try to dig out some paint for our sign painting project so we can get started on that. We may need to do a little prep work before painting, so we may start with that. I know Syn-dee has expressed an interest in that project, but there is certainly room for more if someone wants to help with that.
