Dear Awe-Inspiring Volunteers,
For our upcoming workday, Saturday, October 23rd, beginning at 9 am, we are going to disperse across the Community Forest to do an autumn tune-up before the winter rains come. My plan is to divide into four teams each with a specific set of trails to cover:
Team #1 – will focus on Trails #1 and #18, the 14th Street trail and the 11th Street connector from Redwood Park. That group will clean the bridges, pick up trash (including off trail . . . more of a problem in this area), trim and clear the 11th Street connector, pull ivy, etc.
Team #2 – will focus on Trails #9, #4, #16, and #15 . . . covering social trails that have developed over the summer (a big issue in this area), bridge cleaning, etc.
Team #3 – this crew will drive into Trail #12 and focus on the upper Forest trails — Trails #6, #11, #7, #12, and #13.
Team #4 – this crew will drive to the West End Road trailhead and work on the South Fork Janes Creek Trail, Trails #5, #10, and #11. There are a number of bridges in this area and the first .5 mile from the trailhead is pretty overgrown and needs brushing.
Lots to be done.
We will meet at the Fickle Hill parking area (see map below).
The Humboldt Trails Council will be present at the end of this work day to provide breakfast burritos (individually wrapped!), pastries, fruit, and coffee. Emily Sinkhorn, the new head of Arcata’s Environmental Services division will be in attendance and there will be a short program. We will congregate again near the Fickle Hill Trailhead at about 11:45 for those activities. It will be nice to be a little more social around the work day (socially distanced still).
The local COVID-19 numbers remain high so we want to continue to be careful. It is essential that you wear a mask and social distance. Please do not come if you are not vaccinated (let me know if there is a reason I should make an exception for you). I will have my usual supply of gloves. Of course, don’t attend if you are not feeling well.
I am going to ask people to RSVP again (firstname.lastname@example.org) to help me plan. I will be limiting numbers to 25 for this work day. And, of course, new volunteers are always welcome.
I hope to see many of you on the 23rd! As always, we work rain or shine. Thanks! Questions welcome . . .
